In the past 30 years, the costs of health care have soared in developed countries, especially in the United States. Due to rapidly escalating health care costs, Americans, Europeans, Canadians and Australians in ever increasing numbers began to search for alternatives that could reduce their personal out of pocket medical expenses. In the last few years, millions of people from developed nations have chosen to become Medical Tourists.

International fees for medical and surgical care are very low compared to what is paid in the United States, Europe or Australia. In some cases, the savings from dental work alone can give people extra money for a luxury vacation. Medical Tourism can certainly be a win-win proposition. While taking care of health needs at deep discounts, shopping excursions, river tours, sight-seeing, nature excursions, intellectual pursuits, religious pilgrimages, cruises, ancient site tours, safari’s, hunting or fishing trips and visits to international beaches can all be arranged around a medical appointment schedule.  Medical Tourism is a simple concept: people combine medical treatments with vacations, and use the savings on their medical care to pay for the vacation.

My name is B. Harris. I'm from Lexington, Mississippi-USA. I have definitely been blessed in India. The doctors there are great. I went to India to have Laparoscopic Surgery, and the doctors and staff there are some of the most caring people I've ever been around. Each doctor I've seen in India were very supportive and kind to me. Some of the tests I had to have done before surgery were very scary, but focusing on all the comfort and compassion shown by the doctors the tests were a lot easier.

Since arriving in India, Dr. Kamal, the owner of the India Medical Tourism company, has been more than helpful. Actually, I think he went way overboard in helping me. I encountered a problem because I mistakenly brought a cashiers check instead of bringing travelers checks, and I became very depressed because I could not use that check in India. Dr Kamal was so caring, and concerned even though he did not have to be. He stuck with me while getting my situation resolved. I was going through so much difficulty in India. I was having problems behind problems. I had, emotionally, given up on having surgery, but Dr Kamal never gave up. He was always trying to lift my spirit and keep me from feeling discouraged. He stuck with me until everything was final. He's a very sweet and funny man.

I have a fear of hospitals, but in India it doesn't seem like a hospital. They treat you like family. They are always there before you need them. Most of the people are very funny, if you can understand what there saying. They were very helpful to me before and after surgery.

The hotel was nice, elegant and quiet. They brought free breakfast every morning. They have round-the-clock room service. They prepared special meals after I had surgery and brought the meals to my room each hour. I would recommend India Hospitals to anyone; Not just because of how great all the doctors are, but also because all the procedures are so affordable. You will be in great hands!!!!

Thanks,

B. Harris

To cater to an international clientele, many private hospitals abroad are applying for accreditation from the Joint Commission International, the global arm of the institution that accredits most U.S. hospitals. Many of the tourist hospitals are working with surgeons who have trained in the U.S. or Britain, which is a great comfort to American patients.  Many major employers in the U.S. are self-insured, which means they pick up the tab for much of their employees' medical care. Top Indian hospitals have 70-94% lower prices over similar facilities in the U.S.  Thus, if more private payers sent patients abroad for surgeries, the savings would be enormous.

I highly recommend Medical Discounts International and their India affiliate group, Life Smile, and it's staff. I went to India for a Bariatric Weight Loss Surgical procedure in January 2008.  At first I was very skeptical about the idea of traveling half way around the world for a major surgery.  After an initial screening and referral from Medical Discounts International in California, Dr. Parpyani called me at home from India.  I couldn't get a doctor in the US to pay that much attention to me!  Dr. Parpyani assured me that he would be happy to answer any questions.  And, I had a ton of them.  He  answered each and every one of them.  No question was left unanswered.  He was there to support and resolve any situation that came up.

I felt extremely well taken care of and pampered.  In fact, I felt like everyone went overboard to make sure my journey and operation went smoothly and stress free.  While I was there, my husband got a lot of needed dental work done at a fraction of what it would have cost in the U.S.  I also had some dental work and laser surgery done on some sun spots.  Dr. Parpyani and staff completely orchestrated everything.  We had a driver to drive us to all of these appointments. I highly recommend MDI/Life Smile to anyone thinking about traveling abroad to get medical procedures.  If you want expert, compassionate, detailed and well managed attention for your overseas medical treatment, look no further.

K.W.  Orlando, FL (USA)

Note:  U.S. immigration policies make it difficult for physicians educated in the United States to stay--thus making U.S. trained physicians in India the ideal professionals to attract American patients.

Recent Patient To India

Having visited New Delhi for Rhinoplasty and Jaw sliding procedures, I can confidently claim that I have received better health care than i would have got in my own country. The nursing staff at the hospital was the best i have ever experienced, the care they showed to me was incredible.

The surgeon understood my problems and carefully explained what he would do during my procedures, leaving me feeling confident and without stress before the procedure. Again the staff during the operation was the kindest ever making me feel I was in the best possible hands regarding this procedure, I went under the anesthetic with no worries.

The aftercare and my stay in hospital was wonderful, I was visited regularly by the doctors and nursing staff. The hospital food and the hygiene standards in the hospital were better than in UK. I would recommend India for any one considering the surgery. The health care standards in India are high and the cost is greatly reduced.

Following my full recovery I can say that I am very happy with the results. The surgeon in India is an artist, as well as an excellent surgeon. I thoroughly recommend him for Rhinoplasty and jaw surgery. I am overjoyed with the final result.

Medical tourism growing worldwide

For many medical tourists, the cost of surgery in India can be one-tenth of what it is in the United States or Western Europe, and sometimes even less. A heart-valve replacement that would cost $200,000 or more in the U.S., for example, goes for $10,000 in India--and that includes round-trip airfare and a brief vacation package. Similarly, a metal-free dental bridge worth $5,500 in the U.S. costs $500 in India, a knee replacement in India with six days of physical therapy costs about one-fifth of what it would in the States, and Lasik eye surgery worth $3,700 in the U.S. is available for only $730. Cosmetic surgery savings are even greater: A full facelift that would cost $20,000 in the U.S. runs about $1,250.

The India hospitals and clinics that cater to the tourist market are among the best in the world, and many are staffed by physicians trained at major medical centers in the United States and Europe. India hospitals perform nearly 15,000 heart operations every year, and the death rate among patients during surgery is only 0.8 percent--less than half that of most major hospitals in the United States.

In India hospitals are backed by sophisticated research infrastructures as well. India is among the world’s leading countries for biotechnology research, while both India and South Korea are pushing ahead with stem cell research at a level approached only in Britain. In many foreign clinics, too, the doctors are supported by more registered nurses per patient than in any Western facility, and some clinics provide single-patient rooms that resemble guestrooms in four-star hotels, with a nurse dedicated to each patient 24 hours a day.

Add to this the fact that some clinics assign patients a personal assistant for the post-hospital recovery period and throw in a vacation incentive as well, and the deal gets even more attractive. Additionally, many Asian airlines offer frequent-flyer miles to ease the cost of returning for follow-up visits.

What sort of trends in medical tourism do you foresee in the near future?

Some important trends guarantee that the market for medical tourism will continue to expand in the years ahead. By 2015, the health of the vast Baby Boom generation will have begun its slow, final decline, and, with more than 220 million Boomers in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, this represents a significant market for inexpensive, high-quality medical care.

Medical tourism will be particularly attractive in the United States, where an estimated 43 million people are without health insurance and 120 million without dental coverage--numbers that are both likely to grow. Patients in Britain, Canada and other countries with long waiting lists for major surgery will be just as eager to take advantage of foreign health-care options.

Looking ahead, are there any medical technologies or procedures in which particular countries excel?

India has top-notch centers for open-heart surgery, pediatric heart surgery, hip and knee replacement, cosmetic surgery, dentistry, bone marrow transplants and cancer therapy, and virtually all of India’s clinics are equipped with the latest electronic and medical diagnostic equipment.

Unlike many of its competitors in medical tourism, India also has the technological sophistication and infrastructure to maintain its market niche, and Indian pharmaceuticals meet the stringent requirements of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Additionally, India’s quality of care is up to American standards, and some Indian medical centers even provide services that are uncommon elsewhere. For example, hip surgery patients in India can opt for a hip-resurfacing procedure, in which damaged bone is scraped away and replaced with chrome alloy--an operation that costs less and causes less post-operative trauma than the traditional replacement procedure performed in the U.S.
